Overview
Thank you for your interest in the Effects of Cognitive Training (ECT) Study being conducted at UCSB’s Psychology Dept.! The purpose of this study is to test the effects of a feedback-based cognitive training program on memory and cognition in healthy adults age 60 to 85. The overall time commitment for this study is approximately 7 hours over a 5-week period. Participants can earn up to $100 for completing all portions of the study.
The study involves the following activities:
- You will engage in cognitive training exercises on a mobile device or tablet computer for 15-minutes a day, 5-days per week, for 4 weeks.
- You will wear a small brain sensor device (in a headband) while doing the cognitive training exercises.
- You will complete online (or paper, if you prefer) questionnaires before and after the 4-week cognitive training program.
- All activities will be completed in your own home, using devices that will be mailed to you. You will be carefully trained to use the devices.
Eligibility
- Between 60 and 85 years of age
- Right-handed
- In relatively good health and not taking medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, mood/mental disorders, dementia, or neurological disease.

- What if I am 55 years of age?

- What happens if I leave the study early?

You will be paid according to the parts you completed study: $25 for the questionnaires and training, $50 for completing the entire 4-week program, $15 for the last round of questionnaires/mailing supplies back, and a $10 bonus for completing all elements of the study.
- What happens if my devices are not working?

If your devices are not working properly, we will mail you replacements immediately.
- What if I don’t have a laptop or mobile device?

We will mail (loan to you during the time of the study) a laptop or tablet to your home strictly following COVID guidelines for mailing. Also, we will provide you with a live training session for how to use the devices via a virtual meeting with our research team and other participants. We will also mail you a return label to mail the equipment back to us when you are done.
- What if I am not fluent in English?

If you can read and understand the instructions, consent form and questionnaires that is fine. However, if you cannot, then we are sorry that we cannot invite you at this time, but we are happy to refer you to some of our other studies that might be suitable.
